About the Bahá’í Faith

The Bahá’í Faith is an independent world religion with nearly six million members residing in more than 124, 00 localities and 204 countries throughout the world. With spiritual principles that affirm the oneness of God, of humanity and of religion, Bahá’ís believe that their faith is but the most recent stage in the evolution of one divinely ordained process and that Bahá’u’lláh is the Messenger of God for this age.

The Bahá’í Faith is the youngest of the world’s religions. Its founder, Bahá’u’lláh (1817-1892), is regarded by Bahá’ís as the most recent in a line of Messengers of God that stretches back beyond recorded time and includes Abraham, Moses, Buddha, Krishna, Zoroaster, Christ and Muhammad.

Bahá’u’lláh enunciated the following principles as the basis for the unity of mankind: the independent investigation of truth; the elimination of all forms of prejudice; the equality of women and men; harmony between science and religion; elimination of the extremes of wealth and poverty; and universal peace. Bahá’ís seek spiritual solutions to social problems and work actively towards bringing about spiritual transformation on a personal level to affect global transformation.

The word Bahá’í comes from the Arabic word Bahá, meaning glory or splendor. The beginning of the Bahá’í Faith dates from 1844, the year that the Báb (another Arabic word meaning “the Gate”) announced His Mission as the herald of a new Messenger prophesied by the Messengers of the past.

The central theme of Bahá’u’lláh’s message is that humanity is one single race and that the day has come for its unification in one global society. Representative of most of the nations, races and cultures on earth, Bahá’ís are working to give Bahá'u'lláh’s teachings practical effect. Their experience is a source of encouragement to all who share the vision of humanity as one global family and the earth as one homeland.
